Two films represented by Portugal Film have been select to attend Rotterdam International Film Festival's next edition, to be held from January 27 to February 7 - The Mesh and the Circle, by Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela; and Los Barcos, by Dominga Sotomayor, two short films distributed by Portugal Film.
The Mesh and the Circle, the debut film of the visual artists Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, continues its international journey after its debut and award at IndieLisboa.
The film creates in a unique sensorial experience, a game of construction about manual labour and its empirical history. Mariana Caló e Francisco Queimadela work together since 2010. Their practice is developed with a privileged use of moving images, which intersects installative and site-specific environments, and also drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. Their work was exhibited in London, Guimarães, Prague, Porto, Berlin, Lisbon, and Milan, and received several awards.
Los Barcos, by the Chilean filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor, is one of the segments which compose the feature Here in Lisbon, produced by IndieLisboa. Los Barcos follows an actress, from Chile, who travels to Lisbon in representation of a film. She has only a secondary role on the film, but nobody else is available. She finds it difficult to answer the questions about the film at the Q&A in the Cinematheque. The next day she plans to visit the city, but ends up with a Portuguese stranger in an abandoned area on the other side of the river.
Dominga Sotomayor returns to Rotterdam after wining, in 2012, the Tiger Award with the feature film De Jueves a Domingo, with which she also won the Grand Prize City of Lisbon at IndieLisboa.
Portugal Film will be in Rotterdam between January 28th and February 2nd to present the films and develop contacts with the international programmers.
